On her industry…

I’ve always loved the internet. Back in 2004, I started teaching myself HTML/CSS and Photoshop so I could make websites. I ended up getting a job in an advertising agency because the Creative Director saw a website I built. From there, I just kept making things on the internet. I love the internet. It’s endless what you can do with it.

On her doubts and fears…

When I started my first company, I was pretty optimistic that nothing bad could happen. That still holds true. Nothing ever bad happens. However, now I try to ask myself a lot more realistic questions before I begin a new company. I need to know if this is something I see myself working on for at least 3 years. That question leads to a whole bunch of other questions. How will this make money? Who is the market? How can you market to them? What is the product? How long will it take to build? How much effort will it take to maintain? Will I enjoy figuring this all out for three years?

On taking the leap…

Taking the initial leap was a life change. I had to quit my job and start freelancing. My job at the time was way too demanding. Even if I just worked an 8-hour day, it was so emotionally draining. All I wanted to do when I got home was eat, play, or sleep. I needed to figure out a way to freelance that wouldn’t emotionally drain me or burn me out.

On how her career goals have changed…

When I was younger, I was always really bad about thinking or daydreaming about the future. Especially in my 20s. Maybe I was too busy or the opportunities didn’t see realistic. So being where I’m at now is really exciting.

On one of her biggest surprises…

What surprised me most about this journey is how long it takes to find your market and market to them well. I always assumed that we would iterate on the product, but I never thought that way with marketing.

On what she’s learned over time…

I’ve learned throughout this process that I love building communities and connecting people. It’s so exciting because I’m doing things I’ve never done before. Problem solving erryday.

On her definition of success…

When someone tells me that they have used something I’ve made and it’s impacted them in a pivotal way I feel as if I’ve hit my marker for success.

On her most beneficial skills…

The skills that have really helped me throughout this process - being really good learning new skills. OR being super-efficient and hiring the right people. However, I wish I knew before I started that things are always going to take WAY longer. I still have to tell myself that.

On her career advice…

My career advice for everyone would be to get really good at learning new skills. Find a project to learn a skill. When you have the confidence that you can learn anything, it’s super empowering.
